Liposuction Q & A

What is liposuction?

Liposuction is a surgery to reshape specific areas of your body by removing unwanted fat deposits. Liposuction works for both men and women. It helps to slim down your silhouette and improve your body contours and proportion.

Liposuction is the second most common plastic surgery procedure — second only to breast augmentation. The procedure is an ideal option to target and remove stubborn fat deposits that haven't responded to diet or exercise.

What areas does liposuction treat?

Peak Plastic Surgery Center offers liposuction to target all of your problem areas. The treatment can remove unwelcome pockets of fat on your:

  • Neck
  • Thighs
  • Buttocks
  • Hips
  • Waist
  • Upper arms
  • Back
  • Chin
  • Calves

However, liposuction isn’t effective for tightening loose skin or eliminating cellulite, the dimpled skin that’s common on your buttocks, thighs, and hips.

Can liposuction help me lose weight?

Liposuction is a treatment to remove areas of existing fat. However, it's not a substitute for a healthy diet and regular exercise.

What happens during liposuction?

Dr. Barker uses anesthesia during your procedure, such as IV sedation, local anesthesia, or general anesthesia. Anesthesia helps to ensure your comfort. Dr. Barker begins your treatment by making tiny, hardly noticeable incisions. He infuses the area with local anesthesia to reduce bleeding and trauma.

He slides a thin hollow tube through the incisions, moving the device in a controlled back-and-forth motion to loosen fat deposits. A surgical vacuum attached to the tube removes the fat. Dr. Barker removes the tube and closes your incisions once your treatment is complete.

What happens after my liposuction procedure?

The team at Peak Plastic Surgery Center discusses your after-care, so you know what to expect. They may suggest wearing a compression garment or elastic bandages compress the skin to your new body contours and help manage swelling.

Most patients return to office work and can perform light activities about a week or so after liposuction. You'll notice swelling in your treatment area that may take several months to go away.

As the swelling subsides, it reveals your new slimmer body contours. Your results should be long-lasting, as long as you maintain a stable weight and get regular exercise.
